Guidelines And Principles to Live By…

by Carolyn Collin November 8, 2015

This year I’ve been introduced to the eight limbs of yoga. Now, for those who might think it means people who do yoga discover body parts they didn’t know they had, let me explain. The “eight limbs” are moral, ethical, and social guidelines to live by, both on and off the yoga mat. What you say, do and think affects your happiness and well being, so the ancient tradition of yoga has principles to help us live more consciously. Aligning yourself with these practices is said to bring about inner peace in body, mind and spirit.

8 Limbs of Yoga…

The following is a brief summary of the eight limbs of yoga, as well as the ones that I’ve been personally focusing on and integrating into my life for the last month:

1st Limb –Yama deals with our behaviour and how we conduct ourselves in everyday life.

2nd Limb – Niyama has to do with our chosen spiritual practice(s) and self discipline.

3rd Limb – Asana focuses on the practice of the actual physical yoga postures for wellbeing.

4th Limb – Pranayama is about bringing awareness and expansion of the life force through the breath.

5th Limb – Pratyahara is the withdrawal of the five senses in order to experience our inner world.

6th Limb – Dharana is concentration/focus in order to cut through the distracted mind, and bring about more calm and centeredness.

7th Limb – Dhyana is meditation. Dhyana helps to dissolve the sense of separation with the Divine, which results in a sense of oneness and deep peace.

8th Limb – Samadhi is the supreme state. A state of consciousness where we move beyond time, space, and form.

Currently, I’m practicing limbs, 2, 4 and 7…

For limb 2, I attend the Centre for Spiritual Living in Edmonton on Sunday mornings. This acts as a weekly discipline, and good reminder of my spiritual practices. I apply limb 4 by reminding myself daily to breathe deeply and mindfully, to find little pauses for awareness in the day. Lastly, I meditate on a nightly basis for 10-20 minutes, to relax the mind from the day, which is limb 7.

These small acts help me to better “land” in my body and become more present to the moment. If you’d like more harmony and balance in your life, I would suggest you explore the 8 limbs of yoga more deeply, and work on slowly integrating them into your own life.

The Surrender Experiment by Michael A. Singer

by Carolyn Collin February 15, 2016

As I walk this spiritual path it becomes more clear to me that life has been brilliantly serving my highest good since I was born. Michael A. Singer speaks of the path to surrendering and trusting life’s process rather than fighting against it.

I borrowed this book from a friend who persuasively encouraged me to take it home as she advised I wouldn’t be able to put it down. I woke up on a Saturday morning and read up to Chapter 29. She was right! It was a compelling story about the author’s journey with the intention of surrendering to what is. A few of my favourite lines in the book are, “I had to let go of myself and something very special had followed. I was willing to face loneliness and fear and not grab for relief” and “liberation at any cost.”

Michael A. Singer speaks about how important freeing himself from himself meant. His aim was to do anything to get to a place where he felt total internal peace–liberation at any cost. What he experienced, like many of us experience at some point in our lives is the dark night of the soul. It inspired me to know that I wasn’t the only one that felt the fire of spiritual purification.

The book is a quick and easy read and may leave you with a new way to view your own life.

Radical Self Love by Gala Darling

by Carolyn Collin June 15, 2016

After facilitating this past weeks SOULsisters™ Retreat it solidified in me how much our society needs Self-love material. Thank goodness for the many Self-love Gurus already paving the way out there and teaching the principles found on the topic of complete “Self-Care.” Dare I say, this should be a mandatory subject in our school systems!

I picked up this book a month ago and started reading it last week. The book is broken into 3 parts: “Loving yourself, where it all begins; Loving others, takes what you learned about self-love and expands it out into the universe; Daily Magic, tips for making your world a more magical place.” Now, you might be wondering why I would recommend an unfinished book at this point? In light of the recent extreme violent acts in Orlando, United States, I feel it’s an ab-soul-ute must. A properly nurtured mind and soul could not, nor would not want to carry out these hostile attacks. Its time we take a stand….a stand to love.

People can only give out what’s inside them. I pray for an extreme love movement to take place on our planet. Enough with the hate and blame! We can’t expect certain people, places, and cultures not to retaliate if we are also guilty of doing the same darn thing. No matter how you look at it. Anger begets anger…period.

Nelson Mandela, and Mahatma Ghandi demonstrated this clear understanding as well as the Dalai Lama. My own meditation Guru used to say all the time, “no love for you, no love for anyone else.” We must all be the change we wish to see in the World. If you see a brother or a sister hurting, I feel it’s your duty for “humanity’s sake” to assist in any way you can—big or small. You never know what affect you could have on that person and in turn our “society” as a whole. Saying that, there is the opposite, you never know what would happen if you turned a blind eye. We see this all the time in the news. There are a lot of people yearning for connection and belonging out there.

This book outlines the way to love and care for yourself and then how to love and care for the World at large. I am so passionate about this topic, that I am making it my mission to teach others until the day I make my transition. The World needs each and everyone one of us to get out there and be love and light workers. Please join me by sharing this book with others.

Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda

by Carolyn Collin July 15, 2016

Autobiography of a Yogi recounts the exceptional life of Paramahansa Yogananda. As expressed on Amazon.ca this written work is “One of the 100 Best Spiritual Books of the Twentieth Century,” It’s been translated into 20 languages, and is regarded worldwide as a classic of religious literature.

This particular spiritual guru was one of the first to bring the teachings of Kriya yoga to the West. His teachings were soul-revealing. People gathered from all walks of life, from around the World to experience his likeness and wisdom. This book discusses many enlightened situations that Yogananda witnessed during his lifetime.

If you’re seeking inspiration and in the same way, you desire to strengthen your faith in something greater, this wonderful read will do just that. After all, don’t we want less fear and more faith?!

I thoroughly enjoyed the play on words and descriptive dialogue that enlivened the senses and made for a better understanding of the points that were being conveyed. There are many little moments of deep food for thought lines sprinkled from beginning to end. As an example: “Be comfortable within your purse,” he often said. “Extravagance will bring you discomfort.”

A read that makes you think about your current position in life, thats my kind of book!
